Thank you for your interest in our Resident Firefighter Program at Lake Dillon Fire Protection District. We believe our Resident Firefighter Program is an excellent opportunity for people interested in pursuing a career in the fire service.

Lake Dillon Fire Protection District’s intent is to provide a learning environment where program participants have the ability to take advantage of college-level instruction, continuing education through seminars, "on the job" skill development, and the achievement of additional certifications in the fields of Fire and Emergency Medical Services in order to obtain a career position in the fire service.

Lake Dillon Fire Protection District provides compensation for hours shifted, rent–free housing and many additional benefits. As a side note, residency in District housing is a requirement for the program and housing for married couples is not available.

Shift Requirements

Residents are required to work eight, 24-hour shifts in a 24-day work period (48-96 schedule) with his/her assigned engine company. Residents are required to attend all scheduled shifts unless provisions are made ahead of time. Shifts begin at 8:00 A.M.

  • Fire Fighter I – Colorado, IFSAC or DOD
  • Hazardous Materials Operations
  • EMT-B (National or Colorado certification)
     
ATTAIN WITHIN FIRST YEAR
  • I200 – Incident Command System
  • Red Card – S130 / 190
  • NIMS - IS700

Educational Opportunities

College coursework may be completed through any In-State Community College and will be eligible for reimbursement based on grades. Residents choosing to complete college coursework through an Out-of-State College are not eligible for reimbursement of coursework, but may apply for an interest-free LDFR loan of up to $1000.

Information regarding some In-State Community Colleges can be found online at the websites for Red Rocks Community College, Colorado Mountain College, and Pikes Peak Community College.

Applicable areas of community college coursework that are reimbursable and would benefit the department and the resident are:

  • Fire Science Technology
  • Emergency Management and Planning
  • Business
  • Chemistry
  • Computers including Computer Information Systems, Computer Networking and Computer Science
  • English
  • Spanish
  • Speech Communication
  • Pre-requisite classes for Paramedic, but not a paramedic program at this time.

Qualifications to Apply for Resident Program

All applicants, regardless of skill, certification, experience or educational level are encouraged to apply. It is the department’s goal to have a well-rounded staff capable of handling any type of fire or medical emergency.

The following minimum qualifications are desired for acceptance into the Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue Resident Program:

  • Must be a minimum age of 18 years old.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or GED, as a minimum educational requirement.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license or be eligible to obtain a valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Must be able to pass reference, background, and motor vehicle investigations.
  • Must be able to pass drug screening and a physical ability test.

Selection Process

Step 1

Prospective applicants must have an application for employment and any additional application materials on file to be considered for the testing process. Please contact Matt Scheer in HR at (970) 513-4107 or mscheer@ldfr.org for an application packet.

Step 2

Application materials will be reviewed in a timely manner. Applicants whom LDFPD wishes to invite for testing will be notified by telephone or by mail.

Step 3

Candidates invited to test with LDFPD will need to come in person to the testing site. Candidates should be prepared to take written tests, a physical ability test, and be ready to complete an interview.

Step 4

Once all candidates have tested, LDFPD will notify applicants of the results of the process. It is LDFPD’s policy to notify candidates only of successful placement on the waitlist and not of individual rank placement.
