Wildfire Mitigation
Summit County has significant amounts of property built in a "wildland/urban
interface" meaning that houses are often built with trees of the forest and other
fire "fuels" in close proximity. In such a situation, fire is easily carried
from grasses, bushes, and trees to buildings.
Summit County has an active plan and an officer to help homeowners reduce the
hazards to their properties during wildfire season. This process, called wildfire
mitigation, has been very effective across the country in helping to reduce the potential
for loss of real property when fire rages in wildland areas. Mitigation is performed
by the selective removal of vegetation growing too close to buildings for safety.
